INTRODUCTION
An alloy is a substance consisting of 2 or more chemical elements with one of them being a metal thus resulting in desire metallic properties. Steel is in alloy of iron and carbon.
FUNCTIONS OF MAIN ALLOYING ELEMENTS
| Element | Main Functions |
|---|---|
| Carbon (C) | Increases hardness and strength Reduces toughness |
| Chromium (Cr) | Improves hardenability Enhances high-temperature strength Increases wear resistance Provides corrosion resistance (Cr > 14%) |
| Cobalt (Co) | Improves retention of hardness at high temperatures |
| Molybdenum (Mo) | Increases strength and yield point Improves hardenability and wear resistance |
| Manganese (Mn) | Reduces the effects of sulfur (iron sulfides) Improves hardenability and wear resistance |
| Nickel (Ni) | Improves toughness at low temperatures Enhances corrosion resistance |
| Tungsten (W) | Improves toughness and grain structure Enhances high-temperature strength and wear resistance |
| Vanadium (V) | Increases wear resistance Improves high-temperature strength Enhances hardness retention |
| Silicon (Si) | Acts as a deoxidizing agent Increases strength and wear resistance |
It is of importance that certain elements are as low as possible. Elements like Hydrogen, Oxygen, Nitrogen, Phosphorous,
Sulphur create defects inside & also reduce the mechanical properties of steel.
